Project Reports: Surface Sealing
Historic Mill in Potsdam
WEBAC®5611 protects the structure of a popular traditional German restaurant
The historic mill in Potsdam which is very popular among residents and tourists had been closed for almost 5 years. The restaurant built on request by Emperor Wilhelm II in 1908 could eventually be reopened last summer following extensive reconstruction work. WEBAC®5611 was used for putting into place sealings in the building, for sealing the exterior wall of the basement and for crack-bridging measures protecting the base against dampness. The use of construction chemicals in historic buildings is a frequent matter of public discussions and requires very gentle product qualities. Thanks to its outstanding characteristics, WEBAC®5611 meets all the strict requirements demanded in the protection of historical monuments and offers excellent protection of the undergrade building components against rising seepage water according to DIN 18195, part 4. The surface preparation carried out in the basement of the historic mill was thus restricted to the removal of brittle particles from the surface. WEBAC®5611 was then applied by brush in two subsequent procedures to form a flexible, crack-bridging exterior sealing. Experts provided the historic pillars with a horizontal sealing (WEBAC®1403) before applying WEBAC®5611 by brush. The surface texture incl. cracks, surface imperfections, plaster profiles and the old masonry paint was preserved according to the regulations stipulated for the protection of historic monuments. Upon conclusion of the curing process, a specific contact paint was applied to form a continuous sealing of excellent surface qualities from the foundation to the base. A final coating with light yellow casein distemper followed and turned the traditional restaurant into a feast for the eyes and a delight for the taste-buds not only for tourists and residents but also for curators of monuments.
