Surface sealing: bituminous acrylate sealants and bituminous thick coatings for sealing surfaces in building structures

Special reactive bituminous acrylate sealants are used for sealing surfaces in building structures. They are suitable for undergrade building structures as well as for freely accessible building structures. Structural elements with ground contact, however, must be laid bare before bitumen coatings for surface sealing can be applied. Bituminous coatings withstand high water loads and are especially suited for use in monument conservation.

Surface Sealing: Preparatory Work  

Structural analysis before use: 

• Nature and condition of the substrate
• Structural conditions (temperature and air humidity)
• Water load classes
• Existing surface interruptions due to fitted components (e.g. pipe passageways)

This provides information on: 

• Selection of suitable product
• Pretreatment of substrates

Substrates must be free of loose and separative substances. Slightly absorptive substrates should be roughened using a suitable method. Open joints, concave moldings and rounded edges in corners must be closed with mortar or floated to obtain a closed, smooth surface. Old, firmly adhering bitumen coatings can be reworked after cleaning. 

Application 

Bituminous Acrylate Dispersion 

It is recommended to apply a thin priming coat of WEBAC_® 5611 without cement before mixing WEBAC_® 5611 with the cement and applying it to the substrate. The bitumen coating can be applied by roller or wide paint brush; spraying is also possible. Reinforcing fabric can be used to reinforce corners and to bridge expansion joints.

Cleaning during and after the surface sealing process

• Clean the equipment thoroughly with water any time work is interrupted for longer periods of time and after completing the surface sealing process
• Remove cured residues from tools with WEBAC_® Cleaner B
